The expansion of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel between Norfolk and Hampton, Va., is the largest highway construction project in Virginia history at $3.8 billion.
It has been a priority project since 2014 to ease congestion on the heavily traveled route.
Construction on the expansion project began in November 2020 and includes adding two massive tunnels between the two cities.
NPCA member Technopref Industries in Cape Charles, Va., is playing a major role in the project, manufacturing the precast concrete segments that will create the tunnels. Each ring of the tunnel is nine segments. Each ring will be installed, one after another, to form the tunnel.
The completed segments will be placed on a barge 18 rings at a time and shipped 25 miles to the site.
The project is expected to be completed in November 2025.
