Students from 19 universities across North America and India converged in Ruston, La., last week for the annual ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition.

With this year’s event hosted by Louisiana Tech University, the NPCA Foundation once again supported and sponsored the competition. Also, NPCA supplied $500 scholarships to teams to help offset material and travel costs, while NPCA’s Claude Goguen served as a judge for the competition.

Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo took home first place, marking SLO’s sixth victory in the 35-year history of the competition. This year marked a return to an in-person event after COVID-19 forced the 2020 gathering to be canceled and a virtual experience in 2021.

Laval finished second, followed by Western Kentucky, Youngstown State and NYU-Tandon.

Lipscomb University, which qualified for the first time in school history, received the Spirit of the Competition Award.

The Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico won the sustainable solutions competition, while Colorado School of Mines won the surveying competition.

“This event allows the Foundation to connect with hundreds of students and faculty advisors from across North America and share the benefits of precast concrete and job opportunities with the industry,” NPCA Vice President of Education and Workforce Development Marti Harrell said.
