With a team of just four, Guardian Concrete has spent more than 45 years building a reputation for quality precast products, personalized service and custom solutions throughout the Albany region.

Guardian Concrete has been serving the greater Albany, New York region for more than 45 years, evolving from its early roots producing burial-related precast products and aerial boxes into a versatile manufacturer of septic tanks, pump tanks, stairs, manholes, catch basins and custom items.

Today, Guardian Concrete operates as a small, tight-knit team, known as an exclusive Bilco customer and manufacturer and recognized for durable, custom precast solutions within roughly a 100-mile radius of Albany.

Behind the hard work and vast production of products is a small but mighty team of four — NPCA’s smallest member to date.

“We’re a small company, but we make a strong product — and we’re not afraid to take on the odd, challenging jobs and really communicate with customers about what they need,” said Chip Herba, the president of Guardian Concrete.

About 25 years ago, Herba, whose family also operated a sand and gravel business, purchased Guardian. Looking for a better outlet for their concrete sand, he saw an opportunity in precast and, with his father’s help, redesigned Guardian’s septic tanks and materials to better serve local contractors and homeowners.

Today, Herba still embodies the hands-on, relationship-driven nature of the company — balancing paperwork, billing and management with driving trucks, visiting complex jobs in person and fielding calls from long-time customers.

A Tight-Knit Family

At Guardian Concrete, having a small team is not a drawback — it is an advantage. Herba said the company’s small but mighty crew creates opportunities that might not exist at larger operations.

“Sometimes competitors tell people, ‘Call Guardian Concrete — they can help you.’ They know we’re smaller, we’ll pick up the phone, and we’ll figure out how to make it work,” Herba said.

While larger manufacturers often rely on multiple departments and layers of management, Guardian Concrete operates with a more personal approach. Team members work side by side, enabling quick decisions and collaborative problem-solving. The result is a workplace where every employee has a voice and a direct impact on the company’s success.

“As a small company, communication is everything,” Herba said. “We talk every day about what needs to be done — for the shop, the trucks and the customers.”

Emily Friedman is a foreman at Guardian Concrete, where she oversees daily setup, form building and quality checks to keep each day’s plan on track. Working in a small, close-knit team, she values strong communication and a culture that’s easygoing but ready to hustle.

“Because we’re so small, we’re all on the same page. The communication is good, and we work really well together — it’s easygoing, but we hustle when we’ve got to hustle,” Friedman said.

That kind of teamwork shows up in the way the crew approaches each day’s production schedule.

Because each person understands the pace of the shop and the expectations of customers, the team can adjust quickly when priorities shift, whether that means helping prepare forms, checking products or making sure deliveries stay on track.

For Friedman, that shared responsibility is what makes the workplace feel like a family. Everyone knows their role, but no one is limited to it, and that willingness to jump in wherever needed helps

Guardian maintain both productivity and consistency.

The result of this small workplace is trust, accountability and a shared commitment to quality.

Meeting Customer Needs

One of the factors that has helped Guardian Concrete remain successful for more than four decades is its willingness to take on projects that larger producers may decline. While the company manufactures a variety of standard precast products, custom work has become an important part of its business. Whether a customer needs a specialty structure, a unique modification or a product designed for a specific application, the team works closely with them to develop a solution.

That flexibility has helped Guardian build lasting relationships throughout the Albany area. Rather than focusing solely on volume, the company prioritizes customer service and responsiveness, taking the time to understand each project’s requirements and recommend the best solution. Herba believes that a personalized approach is one of the company’s greatest strengths.

“We’ve always been willing to do the one-off jobs — light pole bases, special pieces — things other producers don’t want to bother with,” Herba said.

For Guardian Concrete, customer relationships often extend beyond a single project. Many contractors, municipalities and homeowners have worked with the company for years, relying on the team for product recommendations, technical guidance and dependable service. Those relationships have been built through consistent communication and a commitment to following through on promises.
