The U.S. Department of Transportation recently issued a 180-day waiver on the extension of the Buy America rules for construction materials. The waiver applies to any project funded by USDOT when the funding is obligated on or after May 14 and before Nov. 10, 2022.

According to an announcement from USDOT, the agency will use this time to help encourage domestic sourcing of construction materials for transportation infrastructure improvements. The decision was made following feedback from U.S. companies about the need to restrict foreign compliant construction materials during a time of supply chain issues. As a result, the USDOT issued the temporary waiver on the basis that “applying the domestic content preference for these materials would be inconsistent with public interest.”
