Course Description:
All precasters want to supply watertight wastewater treatment tanks for our customers. We are relying on these structures to hold wastewater in and keep surrounding water out. Looking at the anatomy of a wastewater tank, leaking can only occur in three main areas, through the concrete itself, at connections and at joints. This course will focus on watertightness of joints whether they be the tank joint in mid seam or top seam tanks, or in the riser assembly. Proper joint design, good manufacturing practices and proper application of joint sealants will go a long way to making the tank perform like it’s monolithic from top to bottom. We will discuss the considerations in designing and casting tank joints. We will examine ASTM C990 compliant joint sealants and analyze manufacturer installation instructions to ensure a thorough understanding of what size sealant to use, where and how to place it.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify three different types of faulty precast tank joint and how to avoid them.
- Explain how joint sealants are designed to keep tanks watertight.
- Demonstrate how to properly apply joint sealant on tank and riser joints.
