Building Relationships with the Associated Schools of Construction

NPCA Director of Workforce Development Alex Morales, M.Ed., traveled to Sparks, Nev. on Feb. 6-8 to attend the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Regions 6 and 7 Annual Conference and Student Competition.

ASC is a professional association comprised of construction educators and industry professionals who aim to develop and advance construction education.

NPCA has been actively involved in ASC after first connecting with Region 3 Director and Ohio Northern University Professor Richard Miller, Ph.D., back in 2018. Since then, NPCA has participated in the following ASC events:

• ASC Region 3 Annual Conference & Student Competition (Downers Grove, Ill.)
  • October 2018 – NPCA conducted a presentation during the faculty workshop
  • October 2019 – NPCA sponsored a Project Solutions problem statement during the student competition
• ASC Region 6 & 7 Annual Conference & Student Competition (Sparks, Nev.)
  • February 2019 – NPCA conducted a presentation during the faculty workshop and hosted a career fair booth
  • February 2020 – NPCA attended
• Annual ASC International Conference
  • April 2019 (Denver) – NPCA attended and monitored education committee meetings

During the recent Region 6 and 7 conference in February, Morales observed the student competition and networked during the faculty-industry reception and banquet, which culminated future opportunities to guest lecture at Weber University.

Each of the eight ASC regions host an annual conference and student competition. Most of which also include a career fair, where students are ready to hand out their resumes.

Morales recommends that NPCA members consider hosting a career fair booth at ASC regional conferences. Participating in these conferences is a great opportunity to showcase your company and promote precast industry careers amongst construction students entering the workforce.
