Two NPCA professional staff members attended the 2019 ACI Spring Concrete Convention and Expo in Québec, Canada March 24-28.
During the convention, Director of Codes & Standards Eric Carleton attended ACI 301 – Specifications for Structural Concrete as a non-voting member, and Director of Outreach & Technical Education Claude Goguen attended ACI E702 – Designing Concrete Structures as a voting member as well as ACI 130 – Sustainability of Concrete as an associate member.

Claude Goguen prepares to take the podium as he prepares to co-moderate a technical session.

The pair sat in on various meetings covering fibers, precast panels, concrete durability, SCC certification, concrete repair education and parking structures. Additionally, Goguen co-moderated a 2-hour session on precast concrete parking structures.
Carleton noted a few key takeaways that may be of interest to the precast industry and NPCA members.
The ACI 533 – Precast Panels committee is working to update the 533.1R-02, “Design Responsibility for Architectural Precast Concrete Projects” guidance document and is developing a new precast concrete envelope design guide as well as a new design guide for tunnel segments.
Additionally, the ACI 201 – Durability of Concrete committee’s Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC) Task Group 5 is actively producing an article for the Concrete International Magazine. The primary purpose of the article is to inform readers of MIC and to stake out common terms, language, MIC mechanism, etc.
Carleton also took interest in the ACI E612 SCC Certification committee for the purpose of learning more about ACI’s new self-consolidating concrete certification program. He later connected with ACI Certification Managing Director John Nehasil and had an informative discussion on precast specific SCC quality control.
The 2019 ACI Fall Concrete Convention and Expo will take place on Oct. 20-24 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
