The NPCA Utility Structures Product Committee has released a timely utility structure hatch tech note for precast concrete manufacturers. The document coincides with the recently approved ASTM C1802, “Standard Specification for Design, Testing, Manufacture, Selection, and Installation of Fabricated Metal Access Hatches for Utility, Water, and Wastewater Structures.”
The tech note, located on the underground utility products page, will aid producer production practices. The resource identifies selection, installation and usage best practices for hatch door types and steel reinforcement areas to ensure proper concrete coverage and reinforcing placement. In addition, the tech note identifies the difference between fabricated and cast iron doors as related to the precast production process.
The committee states the techniques shared in the tech note, along with proper education, will ensure the new requirements are met with high quality, durable precast concrete products.
