The density of concrete is usually in the range of 140-to-150 lbs./ft.3 When lightweight aggregates are used, the density can be brought down to 90-to-115 lbs./ft.3 This means less self-weight, which allows a precast manufacturer to produce smaller columns and thinner product. Lightweight aggregate has many beneficial uses, including increased fire resistance, higher R-values and increased absorption for internal curing. With so many useful properties, it is important to understand how to use lightweight concrete properly and what standards and specifications are in place. This course will discuss the basics of lightweight concrete – what it is, when to use it and how to use it.
