2024 Webinar Series

Build America, Buy America: What You Need to Know (WEBBABA)

March 14, 2024 | Noon – 1 p.m.

Presenter: Brad Chinery, P.E., NPCA

The Build America, Buy America (BABA) Act was signed into law as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) in November 2021. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued initial guidance for implementation of BABA in 2022, and, after reviewing all public comments, final guidance on Aug. 14, 2023. This webinar will cover the difference between several Made-In-America focused laws, a review of OMB’s final guidance as it applies to the precast industry, what (if anything) precast manufacturers can do to stay competitive on federal government supported infrastructure projects, and the waiver process.

EPDs: Update on Industry Requirements and How to Obtain Them (WEBUPD)

May 9, 2024 | Noon – 1 p.m.

Presenter: Claude Goguen, P.E., NPCA

Legislation is being introduced and passed across the U.S. requiring Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for qualifying projects. It is important for precast producers to stay on top of these developments and be ready to supply these EPDs if required. During this webinar, we will first examine where EPDs are currently required or pending. We will briefly detail what EPDs are and go through the process of getting an EPD, starting with the initial crucial step of gathering production data for a full calendar year. We also will update attendees on developing programs to assist members on EPD procurement.

Introduction to Rigging Safety (WEBIRS)

July 11, 2024 | Noon – 1 p.m.

Presenters: Robert Smith, Fisher Phillips LLP; Curtis G. Moore, Fisher Phillips LLP

Rigging safety incorporates several different factors that can affect your worksite safety. By treating rigging as something that can be dangerous instead of just another piece of equipment, you can help prevent rigging accidents in the precast plant. This webinar provides an introduction to general rigging requirements and introduces multiple types of rigging equipment, capacity requirements, prohibitions, inspection requirements and removal from service criteria.

MIC in Wastewater Treatment: What to Know and How to Protect the Structures Affected (WEBWTC)

Sept. 19, 2024 | Noon – 1 p.m.

Presenter: Claude Goguen, P.E., NPCA

For more than 15 years, NPCA has been engaged in studying the phenomenon of Microbially Induced Corrosion or MIC. During that time, NPCA has funded and managed three major MIC-related research projects. During this webinar, we will discuss the results of those studies and what we now know that could help producer members mitigate the effects of MIC. We will describe the conditions necessary for MIC to occur and how it progresses. We will look at different ways to avoid or disrupt the process of MIC through structure design. We will also discuss other effective mitigation strategies to enhance product durability and resistance to MIC.

Precast University Webinar 2024

PQS II – Technical (WEBPQSIITECH24)

Aug. 8, 13, 15, 20 and 22 | Noon – 4 p.m.

This course is four hours each day (noon – 4:00 p.m. Eastern) for five days. Participants are required to attend all four sessions and pass a final exam to receive credit for this course. The course is a total of 20 hours.

Facilitators: Kayla Hanson, P.E., Concrete Sealants Inc.; Claude Goguen, P.E., NPCA; Hugh Martin, P.E., NPCA

PQS Level II – Technical is designed for plant personnel who are responsible for design, interpretation of drawings, product setup or quality control. Attendees will learn the technical concepts that explain why we do things the way we do them in the plant. This curriculum will decode technical industry jargon and provide attendees with a better technical understanding of the entire precasting process. Engineering concepts such as center of mass and structural analysis will be presented in layman’s terms, as well as discussing their impact on reinforcement placement and proper lifting techniques. We will discuss the mechanical properties of concrete and steel, reading and understanding construction and product drawings, concepts of rigging and lifting, knowledge of specifications and much more. In preparing to take PQS II Technical, attendees should possess a basic knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, elementary algebra and basic physics. A scientific calculator is required for this course.
